Huggy tried insisting he stayed with Dorothy after the ferryman said they all needed to cross. But she gently persuaded the Munchkin, with a warm hug and a kiss, to cross the river and find some food to buy. She waved them off before hurrying to locate Mr Marvelâs caravan so they could rehearse the magic acts sheâd assist him with during the show.
Dorothy excitement grew as the afternoon sped past. Sheâd wear the slinky silver dress for most of the show, which gave her tingles of anticipation at the thought of being dressed in something so sexy in front of an audience. Mr Marvel had instructed her on how to perform a quick-change act. He told her it was a popular part of his show which made her a little nervous. Though there didnât seem much to the act as the clothes were designed to be worn on top of each other and easily ripped off. After mastering how each garment came away the quickest, Dorothy grew more confident, considering performing the act back in Kansas if she made her own clothes.
Not that Aunt Em would approve.
Mr Marvel demonstrated other tricks she needed to assist him with. When he wanted to saw her in half, Dorothy had to move her legs out of the way, or when he made her vanish, she needed to jump out the back of a false door of the box he put her in and run to another container as quickly as she could. He mentioned other acts, they wouldnât have time to practise, but if she followed his instructions, it would all go well, and nobody would get hurt.
Mrs Marvel had spoken about knife throwing, only Dorothy didnât think sheâd be any good at throwing or juggling knives.
Evening fell, and by the time Dorothy walked out on the stage with Mr Marvel in the main village drinking house, an audience of eager faces greeted them. They cheered noisily, adding whistles when Mr Marvel introduced Dorothy, and she gave a twirl in the sparkling silver dress. Though most of the audience sat in darkness, Dorothy could see a lot of Munchkins and tall thin people with a green tint to their skin. They looked vaguely like folk from back in Kansas, and Dorothy wondered if they came from Emerald City.
The enthusiasm of the audience helped calm Dorothyâs nerves. As the show began, she followed Mr Marvelâs directions to the letter. Managing to get her feet precisely positioned, so it appeared sheâd been chopped in half which drew appreciative gasps from the crowd.
In many parts of the show, Dorothy held various items for Mr Marvel, or basically looked pretty and smiled a lot which pleased Dorothy because it meant she wasnât likely to mess up and ruin Mr Marvelâs career as a showman.
When it came time for the quick-change act, Mr Marvel announced to the audience about how it was his new assistants first time while Dorothy rushed behind the curtain. Mrs Marvel, who seemed
